ஒருமுறை பகவான் கிருஷ்ணர் உறியில் ஏறி வெண்ணெய் திருட, அவரை தண்டிக்கும் நோக்கத்தில் விரட்டினாள் யசோதை. அவளிடம் சிக்காமல், நண்பன் ததிபாண்டன் வீட்டுக்குள் நுழைந்தான் கிருஷ்ணன். அவனிடம் தாய் விரட்டி வருவதைச் சொல்லி மறைவிடம் தேடினான். அவனோ, உட்கார வைத்து கிருஷ்ணன் மீது பானையை கவிழ்த்து மறைத்தான்.

''ததிபாண்டா! உன் வீட்டுக்கு கிருஷ்ணன் வந்தானா?'' என விசாரித்தாள் யசோதை. 'வரவில்லை அம்மா!' என குரல் கொடுத்தான் ததிபாண்டன்.

நம்பிய அவளும் கிருஷ்ணனை தேடி அங்கிருந்து புறப்பட்டாள். அதன் பின் கவிழ்த்திருக்கும் பானையை அகற்றச் சொல்லி குரல் கொடுத்தான் கிருஷ்ணன்.

''எனக்கு மோட்சம் தருவதாக நீ வாக்கு கொடுத்தால் விடுவிப்பேன்'' என ததிபாண்டன் அடம் பிடித்தான். கிருஷ்ணனும் சம்மதித்தார். அத்துடன் அவன் விடவில்லை. ''இந்த பானைக்கும் மோட்சம் கொடு'' எனக் கேட்டான். அதற்கு கிருஷ்ணன் சம்மதித்தார்.

இப்போதும் வைகுண்டத்தில் இந்த பானை இருப்பதாக ஐதீகம்.

பகவான் கிருஷ்ணர் மண்பானையிடம் கூட நன்றி உள்ளவராக இருக்கிறார். அது போல நாமும் நன்றி மறக்க கூடாது.
