In the heart of every human being lies a silent, persistent question: Is this all there is?
We adorn our bodies and seek refuge in mental states that arise from the ceaseless movement of our life-force, only to find ourselves adrift in an ocean of impermanence. The fullness of life, the great Siddha Thirumoolar teaches, is only attainable when we transcend these transient possessions to realize the eternal Self within. Having navigated this very ocean of illusion himself, this compassionate master left us a timeless chart: his sacred poetic masterpiece, the Thirumandiram. This exploration delves into the profound first verse, "The Praise of God," which miraculously outlines the entire journey of human existence, from entanglement to supreme liberation.
The Human Condition: Trapped in the Illusion of Time
Here, Thirumoolar reveals a breathtaking truth about our fallen state. The journey begins with the nature of knowledge itself. In its original, pristine state, knowledge is indivisible from a profound peace. However, when this inner tranquility is disturbed, a primordial schism occurs, fracturing this unity into two aspects: a static, observing knowledge and a dynamic, restless activity. It is this separation that defines the unawakened human experience.
This dynamic aspect of knowledge, this ceaseless activity, unfolds in three distinct stages that govern our reality:
- The beginning of motion
- The process of motion
- The completion or cessation of motion
These three stages manifest directly within us, weaving the very fabric of our lives on both the physical and mental planes:
- In physical existence: The beginning of the body, the unceasing movement of the mind, and the end of life(death).
- In the mental plane: The arising of a thought, its expression as a word, and its culmination in an action.
By operating through these sequential stages, this dynamic energy traps the human intellect within the illusion of the three periods of time—past, present, and future. The mind becomes bewildered, bound within this prison of illusion, perpetually chasing phantoms and fleeing from shadows.
The Path of Liberation: From Division to Oneness
Having diagnosed our condition with such precision, Thirumoolar then offers a compassionate and practical remedy. He prescribes a clear, sequential path not merely to escape the prison, but to realize that its walls were never truly there.
- Unification and Single-Pointedness: The first step is to gather the scattered rays of the mind and unite its awareness with the subtle movements of the body and the life-force. This sacred discipline stills the chaotic waters of consciousness, cultivating a single-pointed state that breaks the cycle of distraction.
- Awakening to Karma: Let us pause and consider the profundity of this step. As the mind achieves one-pointedness, it gains the clarity to perceive the true essence of time. This gives rise to the fourth state—the direct perception of karma, the universal law of cause and effect. This is a pivotal moment, a shift from feeling like a victim of circumstance to becoming a conscious observer of life's sacred mechanics. It is here that soul-consciousness (Atma Jnana) finally awakens and begins to blossom.
- Expansion of the Soul: When the mind consciously unites its awareness of karmic actions with the luminous light of this newfound soul-consciousness, the soul begins to expand. It strains against its former confines, its light starting to illuminate the entire inner landscape.
- Mastery over the Senses: This expanding soul-consciousness naturally gains the power to overcome the tyranny of the five senses. No longer a slave to external stimuli, it gently integrates their functions within itself, merging the entire sensory system into a state of deep peace.
- Transformation into Higher Consciousness: As a result of this profound integration, the very substance of mental energy is transformed, becoming a "fountain of peace within knowledge." This purified awareness then expands into the sixth sense (Ajna consciousness) and finally makes its ultimate offering, merging into the seventh chakra, the Turiya state—the boundless "world of supreme peace."
The Supreme Fulfillment: Answering "Who Am I?"
In the sublime silence of the Turiya state, human knowledge ceases its restless, fragmented activity and unites completely with the profound tranquility of the soul. This sacred union, this divine alchemy, grants the seeker the ultimate reward: the direct vision of one’s true Self.
Human life receives the answer to the eternal question — “Who am I?”
Thirumoolar teaches that by faithfully walking this path of self-realization, the seeker attains the supreme fulfillment of life. This attainment is described as a precious, otherworldly fruit, forever beyond the reach of those who remain confined to the illusions of the material world.
The Enduring Wisdom of Thirumoolar
The path laid out in the Thirumandiram is not a historical relic, but a living truth—a timeless map from division to unity, from ignorance to enlightenment. In a modern world filled with endless distraction, Thirumoolar's wisdom endures, reminding us that the ultimate purpose of human life is not found in external acquisition but in the sacred internal journey to discover the Self, which is the eternal source of all peace and fulfillment.
